Christian Songs Have Come A Long Way
Christian music has undergone some major changes over the years. Christian contemporary music is generally considered to have originated in the late sixties during the Jesus movement. Those early Christian music artists like Larry Norman were the ones who paved the way for today’s Christian music artists. There was also a mainstream movement during the sixties that got the message out there. There was even a popular song by Ocean that made it onto the mainstream charts.
This God song was a great way to witness to many who may have never heard the message otherwise. While one would think the biggest hurdle would’ve been non believers, that was not actually the case. Regrettably it was other Christians who would not accept these mainstream Christian songs. They feared that these bands were not capable of delivering the message in a good way. Even with the resistance the movement could not be quashed. Christian music started to gain momentum.
As with any new genre Christian music fell victim to the bandwagon effect. There were Christian songs being produced by bands who were lacking in the talent department. This was due to a lack of talented artists willing to release Christian music. There was a major demand for this new music. In a move of desperation the record companies chose to release music that was not of the greatest quality. I’m not sure if those bands were interested in actually delivering Christ’s message or it was just the only way someone would let them record an album. I leave that up to the good Lord to judge.
Eventually more talented artists started to release Christian music. Many emerging artists finally felt free to proclaim their beliefs, without fear of being ridiculed. The quality of Christian songs saw a great increase. In the early seventies a band called Petra was formed. Petra changed the face of Christian music, they were and still are an influence on many Christian artists. The eighties saw a great increase in popularity for Petra
This popularity carried well into the nineties. More styles of music started being incorporated into Christian music. Christian performers were creating music in just about every style. The Christian music movement had finally arrived.
The nineties were time of great growth for Christian music. DC Talk was huge in the nineties. They were able to adapt with time. I think most people still know the name tobyMac. The Christian rappers such as T-Bone even had an answer for gangsta rap.
Nowadays Christian music is widely accepted. The genre has come a long way over the last few decades. The music was once years behind secular music. That is not the case anymore. The genre as a whole now grows right along with the mainstream.
I never would have thought that I would see a day when Christian albums debut on the Billboard secular charts. You will find these Christian songs in feature films and television. The detractors will always be there. Hopefully this will not discourage people from enjoying this fabulous music.
