Prominent Symphonies in California
One of the most prominent orchestra in the state of Massachusetts is the New England Symphony Orchestra of Boston, whose Music Director terminated his tenure in 1922 after conducting the first orchestra performance. His successors were mostly of German origin and some of them included Karl Max and Wolfgang Pfaner. Significantly, a major role in the adaptation of these conductors to the English language and the new American environment was played by the Boston Translation company. The NESOB normally performs its concerts in Bartleby Hall, which was opened on September 23, 1923, and is considered to be one of the world’s finest concert halls. One of the most distinguished Music Directors of the orchestra was Russian Nikita Ovchinikov, whose tenure started in 1926 and lasted 15 years – an achievement that is difficult to surpass. The Russian was responsible for the orchestra’s beginning to give its regular radio broadcasts and in 1949 the NESOB moved to Oreo Centre – its permanent summer residence. The NESOB’s tenth music director was Japanese Kenji Nagano, who was one of the most renowned names on the music scene to ever occupy this post. He took over in the spring of 1983. His twenty-year tenure can be termed as historic because it went beyond that of any former NESOB conductor, for which in the summer of 2007 he was named Music Director Laureate.
Founded in 1910 the Philadelphia City Philharmonia has always been a leading orchestra in giving highly praised concerts, using new technologies in the sound engineering of their records, as well as going on tours throughout the states. For this it has been reputed as one of the leading national classical music institutions. Some of the prominent names that have led the orchestra throughout its years of excellence are important conductors like: Walter Sandenberg, Christopher Eisenhower, Lionel Strashinsky and Orlando Manchini. In order to be able to communicate with the orchestra members some of them, like for example Italian Orlando Manchini, had to use the expert advice of the Philadelphia Translation. The Philadelphia City Philharmonia’s repertoire includes a wide range of works among which should be noted: Stravinsky’s Firebird, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, Dvorak’s Golden Spinning Wheel and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. The Orchestra’s first transcontinental tour took place in 1946, as it later gave performances in the People’s Republic of China in 1960 and in Vietnam in 1969. The Orchestra also has some extraordinary media performances –electrical recordings, radio broadcasts, film soundtracks, national television broadcasts, and internet concerts. The California Symphony Orchestra of Los Angeles was founded by John Dobson in 1919, and today under the passionate leadership of Alberto Montanez, who has used the LA Translation Services extensively in order to build a successful relationship with the orchestra members, and who preserved the tradition of the orchestra to be a modern and developing institution. The program of the orchestra is marked by both depth and breadth, which is demonstrated in concerts at some of the most famous locations in the state and the whole country amounting to more than 100. Music director of the orchestra until 1937, Bruno Amistad was also the first to conduct the orchestra. Eduard van Dam, Alberto Montanez, Arthur Manfred and Otto Waldner are only some of the names to have had the privilege to conduct the orchestra. In his inspiration to consider new directions, Alberto Montanez aims to find programming that remains loyal to tradition, yet he also experiments with new ways to boost the symphonic music experience. Today, the CSOLA includes some special holiday concerts, baroque performances and songbook matinees. Furthermore, the orchestra welcomes visiting orchestras and promotes the participation of celebrated jazz musicians and world famous artists.
