The Killers – Human

The Killers - Human

What music would be good for 4-5year old kids to listen to while they are skating?
I have been asked to make a CD for a skating party and I need good upbeat music that 4-5 year old kids could/will listen too. There are 3 boys and only 1 girls that are coming so the music has to be general, nothing too girl like, nothing to boy like.
Any suggestions? They have to be able to "dance" to the music and enjoy what they are listening too. I need about 4 songs more.

That would be a fun song. It would be interesting to play with choreography that picked up on the consistant background beat (mechanical, flexed feet, ridgid) and the fluidity of the string instruments (flowing skirts, graceful, pointed feet, lifts). During my listen to the song I felt the inner struggle of a dancer. We have this business day-to-day life but internally we just want to get home and dance in the kitchen, at the studio, on stage but we must wait. The combativeness of the two can lend to steps in your choreography, and your idea of an alternate ending would determine the winner. Best of luck with your vision.

  4. Jonathan says:

    Not "Dancers" it's "dancer"

It says on the Island Records site that he was inspired by a quote that said America was raising a generation of dancers

I thought it was denser too, I was kinda disappointed when I heard that

    Still an amazing song

    Google it, you dumb fuck

  6. chrismet555 says:

As with any song lyrics are down to interprutation, so i will give you myn but this is in no way correct.

I personally think it is about the nervous tendancies of human beings, and how in life we do get scared to show what we are. Metaphorically like you cant get up and dance at your school dance etc.

Though to be fair the lyrics are rather random.

    Good song though :)

  7. XxAngxX says:

To know what he's talking about, you need to know the theme of the song.

The first verse, if you read it carefully, suggests that the speaker is graduating from most likely high school (call came down the line, platform of surrender, etc.). This sets the background, in that it says that the speaker is leaving an institution and going onto his own (nervous when I see an open door). And, starting off with "I did my best to notice" shows that the speaker put an effort to listen to those who were in charge of him in this institution.

The verse after the first chorus repeats the theme in more detail. The speaker literally parts ways with many different ideals which are commonly impressed on children by adults so that they grow up well. The religious slant (devotion, grace, virtue) suggests that rather than school influence, this is rather a parental influence. This, then, suggests the high school graduation for the first verse.

The last non-chorus verse is sung with a notably different tone. This, combined with the words, and the fact that the lines are inquiring about someone else, it seems that the speaker is repeating what concerned adults have said to him. So, the words take the form of the speaker's concerned parents or teachers making sure not only that the speaker's learned "system" of ideals is holding steady even when reminiscing about the time before the system was in place, but also that the speaker is doing alright, since he has apparently not been in touch. Basically, the verse illustrates the parent's/teacher's concern for the ideals instilled in the speaker as well as his general well being.

And now, the chorus. It's repetition, as the chorus, shows that the ideas represent the overall theme of the song as a whole. So, I'll go over each line:
-Are we human?/Or are we dancer?: These two options outline the basic struggle at the heart of the song. "Human", in contrast to "dancer," most likely represents the "system" of ideals that were impressed on the speaker throughout the song. Likewise, "dancer" gives images of wild movement, and thus hints at freedom. So, the speaker, fresh from his institution of learning, doesn't know if human nature is, or should be, more "human" or "dancer," by his definitions. This is similar to the main theme in Herman Hesse's novel Narcisse and Goldmund.
-My sign is vital: The word "vital" adds connotations that the speaker is represented by a feeling of pressing urgency. Basically, it begins to heighten the speaker's concern for his current dilemma.
-My hands are cold: The imagery, in context with the verses, suggests that the speaker is saying that nobody is holding his hand anymore, he's on his own. Adds a hint of isolation.
-And I'm on my knees/Looking for the answers: Suggests resorting to prayer or pleading to figure the question out. Like before, it just shows how important the struggle is in the speaker's life.
-Are we human?/Or are we dancer?: Repeating the question at the end of the chorus shows that his situation described (concerned, alone, and praying/pleading for help with his dilemma) remains.

In addition, near the end, the lines go:
And I'm on my knees/Looking for answers/ (short pause in lyrics) / You got to let me know: Add to this the fact that the instrumental music peaks in concordance with the last line here and you will see that the song shows the climax of his confusion. At the height, he literally pleads for the ominous "you" to let him know. It literally sounds like he is begging higher powers to tell him what human nature is or should be.

Finally, the song ends with a repetition of "Are we human?/Or are we dancer?" This simply suggests that that speaker's need to figure out human nature, and thus possibly his own basic identity ("we" is a bit ambiguously used, after all), still has not been resolved.

Overall, in my opinion, the song translates the feeling of confusion and desperation of the speaker when he tries to figure out human nature, and possibly what his own identity is or should be. It is a song about the anxiety that comes with figuring life out on one's own for the first time.

Sorry this is so long, but I think this song is too complex for a shorter answer. Hell, I could nitpick even more meaning out of the song if I felt like it.

I think the Killers made the song like this because the people who aren't denser, as in thoughtful and creative, like to think that the song is dancer, and those who are gifted view the song as having denser. Are we human, or are we denser/dancer? You pick. I like denser more though as it makes a lot more sense.

Psych techs for one. It's a tough job, though and it can change you if you don't look out for yourself.

  10. matrixfazer says:

Um you can't yet. It is set as of now to be released on September 30. Then you can probably get it off iTunes. I love the song too. Do you know if it is denser/or dancers? Because quite frankly denser makes way more sense than dancers.

  11. ABE says:

Not sure which one is it. Let me check. I have it on my phone.Yup he says denser. Here's a part "And I am on knees looking for the answer. Are we humans or are we denser?" I think that by that he means that are we just simply humans or are we really more complex than we think. More "dense" Do you know what I mean?

  19. Elena says:

I guess it would depend. Are you obsessed because you find them interesting or because you admire them?

I have enciclopedias about serial killers and books and books about the topic, i dont consider myself obsessed and definetly wouldn't call my interest in one specific subject "my favorite guy" in fact i find it kind of disturbing that you have a "favorite" serial killer.

But if you meant that they are fascinating (which they are) and you are glad they are behind bars where they belong then there is nothing wrong with that.

  20. chester says:

It appears that Brandon Flowers, vocalist and keyboard player of the band has stated in an interview that the line “are we human, or are we dancer?” is a reference to a remark once made by the late Hunter S. Thompson, an ascerbic journalist famed for “telling it like it is”, often in offensive terms. He had commented that America is nowadays raising a “generation of dancers”. Thompson committed suicide in 2005.

  26. lilmizsunshine96 says:

He is saying Dancer, which makes plenty of sense if you take the time to think about it. He is asking if were human, having the ability to think for? ourselves, or if we are dancers. Dancers have a choreographed dance, and are told what to do. So do we have the ability to make our own decisions, or are our lives choreographed, meant to be.

  30. DistanceRunner128 says:

It was inspired by a quote by Hunter S Thompson when he said "America is raising a Generation of dancers"

It is also implying that media control everyone now adays and that everyone dances to the same tune as the government.
